But he said he’d call!

July 15th, 2007 | 8 Comments | Posted in Cars, Rants

It could have been fixed with a phone call.

Just one time, I’d like one of the simple services that others in my life seem to enjoy without incident to go the same way for me.

On the fourth of July, while driving back from getting ice cream, my windshield was chipped by some kind of road debris. Not a big deal, right? The next morning, I call up Geico and file a claim, and they hook me up with a local windshield repair company here in town, whose big selling point is that all work is done within 24 hours of the call. They’ll be out to repair the chip between 8AM and 12PM the next day, which would be Friday. Works for me. I’ll be at the office, and they will call me when they’re on the way so I can meet them at the car. Or so they say…

It’s the little things that count

Since I’m at the office now, and can’t really do anything about the newly impending move, I thought I’d take some time to clean off my desk. I came across this project I did for my old supervisor, and I thought you all might enjoy it.

The old department manager was extremely proud of his shiny black Cadillac Escalade. He never missed an opportunity to talk about how it had run-flat tires, 22″ wheels, sixteen-speaker stereo, held the Kleenex while he blew his nose, or that he vacuumed its floor in a checkerboard pattern like the outfield sod at Wrigley Field. What? You don’t?

Anyway, every time he had something done to it, whether it was detailed, or received newer wheels, or whatever, he wanted photos taken. Not particularly good with anything electronic, he had whoever was handy come outside and snap some pictures of him and his huge ride. This usually fell to our internal newsletter editor/photographer or myself, since I was the only artist within reach. Either way, a wonderful use of resources, if you ask me.

EscaladeSo when it came time for him to move on and sell his pride and joy, I was called upon to do the farewell photo shoot for the Classified ads. Given that it was hot outside and I actually had things to do on a deadline, I wasn’t thrilled with the latest assignment. I went out side, said some dumb things like “work it, work it” and “make love to the camera” while I stood there and pretty much just pointed and clicked. Back in the office I told him that it would take a few minutes to compile the photos and generate the thumbnails for him. You can’t see it in the thumbnail, but after the jump you’ll see my little parting gift to him.

It’s 2007. Shouldn’t my car be flying by now?

June 25th, 2007 | 5 Comments | Posted in Cars, Rants

Call me naïve. Call me unrealistic. But in this day of gas crises and oil prices and wars over fossil fuels, wouldn’t you think somebody could have developed a better car by now? Hybrids are nice, but when the car costs more than 30% more than a traditional car, it’s a tough pill to swallow.

I just paid another $31.00 to fill up my tank at the local QuickTrip. I filled it up last Thursday, too, and have to fill it twice a week on average. So, in a period of three and a half days, I blow through a substance that arguably took millions of years (depending on your school of thought) to create, not to mention a couple hundred bucks a month. And we all do it. Even mass transit still uses gasoline, unless it’s an electric train for instance, but where does the electricity come from? Most likely, it comes from burning coal. Hydro-electric power isn’t readily available yet, and is still cost-prohibitive for most areas. Not everyone is on board yet with nuclear power, but it seems to be the most viable, sustainable option. Mr. Fusion, where are you?

I love my car. What’s wrong with that?

In 2003, Phoenix had a “gas crisis,” which only was an inconvenience until the hysteria of the masses set in. After being told repeatedly that there is no crisis, the general populace decided that just in case there was a crisis, they had better fill up every gas tank in every car they owned, plus all the approved containers they could get their hands on. Lo and behold, there was no more gas.

I have to remove what to install this?

March 18th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Cars

Started a little project yesterday. I had to replace my turn signal stalk on my car which is the little slice of heaven labeled #12 in the diagram below. Installation also includes most of #14 plus #10/11. Had I seen this illustration before I started, I can’t say with any certainty that I would have begun.
