You’ve got male

As I prepared for work this morning, I pondered my existence. Maybe it was just a carryover from a dream I don’t remember, or maybe I just woke up on the Zen side of the bed. Or, maybe all the times the women in my life have complained about how lucky I am finally sunk in. Whatever the reason, I came to the conclusion that yes, there are things I like about being a guy. And no, they don’t have anything to do with the ability to write my name in the snow.

Breaking up is hard to do. But fun to watch.

Video GrabOne thing I love about the coffee shop is that it’s always full of interesting people to watch. Sitting with my headphones in, people naturally assume that I’m listening to music. Sure, the occasional head nod to a fictitious tune adds to the effect, but it isn’t really necessary. The best part is that after a few initial comments that would get the eavesdropping motors running, they assume I’m not listening to them, and will say just about anything in front of me.

Do good anyway.

A friend of mine today repeated a quote and attributed it to Mother Teresa, but he left a few lines out. In researching the text, I found out that Mother Teresa modified it from The Paradoxical Commandments written by Dr. Kent M. Keith, 1968:

  1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
  2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
  3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
  4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
  5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
  6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.
  7. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
  8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
  9. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
  10. Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Words to live by.

Pre-holiday ramblings

As I sit here in my cubicle, surfing the internet and listening to my fellow cube-ites “working,” it’s all I can do to stay awake. It’s the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and everyone in the office is screwing around. There’s Christmas music on every station on the radio. There’s a station in Phoenix that began playing all Christmas music 24 hours a day back at the beginning of November, I retaliated by deleting it from my car presets. Now they’re even sprinkling it in on Last.fm. Suck. It was my last hope for not hating the holidays and now it’s gone. I hope they’re happy. At least there’s the iPod.

The giants are out to get me!

November 18th, 2007 | 10 Comments | Posted in Cars, Life

So, not one week after posting a rant about soccer moms and their super-sized kid-mobiles, karma comes around to gently remind me that men, too, often drive more vehicle than they can handle.

I picked up Mom on this afternoon to go spend some time catching up, over coffee, of course, and on the way back, Gigantor in an Ford F350 decides to change lanes on top of us. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but let me tell you, that’s not something I want to have happen again. Rounding a corner on the highway and getting pushed off the road by a raised pickup: priceless.

At least until I hear back from his insurance company.

Crap!

The ABCs of Me

So almost a month ago, I was tagged by MyStarbucks, and because I’m somewhat of a tool, I forgot. Well, I didn’t really forget, but I had too many other important things to do, such as get my hair cut or pick up my dry cleaning. After that, who has the time? Anyway, I finally got around to doing it. A weight has been lifted, a wrong has been righted.
