Chinese for “Fatty”

Panda fixed logoWell, there’s a rude awakening. I was sitting at Panda Express, enjoying one of my guilty pleasures, Orange Chicken, working on my laptop. Gotta multi-task to feel good about myself, you know.

I decide to fire up the broadband card for my Mac (about time, Verizon - but now that it’s here, it will make my list of favorites, for sure), and pull up the Panda web site to look at the nutritional information. According to the site, a serving of the Orange Chicken weighs in with 500 calories. By itself. I’m sure that the person scooped out exactly the 5.5 ounces that is the recommended serving, right?

My second entree (aptly classified, as it turns out) is the Kung Pao Chicken, with a comparatively measly 240 calories. Not bad considering the taste. Zesty! But who eats these by themselves?

Add in the chow mein noodles with another 390 calories. I wanted an egg roll - I’m a sucker for deep-fried, um, anything. That would have set me back another 170 calories each. And God forbid one orders a soda - I have iced tea. All told, the easy, “healthful” meal I just bought easily clears 1,100 calories, without the egg roll, sweet & sour sauce, or a carbonated beverage. I consider how often I eat this meal, I’m now thinking this will be my last dance with the tubby orange chicken.

Today’s fortune: “Your happiness is intertwined with your outlook on life.”
Thanks Confucius. Bet that cost me another 100 calories.

I’ll still be hungry again in two hours.
