Oblong is a shape too
There’s this place I like hang out and work - Soma Express on Camelback at 40th Street, here in Phoenix. Not only do they usually have a pretty good cup of coffee (bottomless, for $1.95!), but great food and free WiFi. Another thing I’ve noticed though, is that the place is full of healthy people. Unnervingly healthy. They may not all be models, but for the most part, the patrons of the cafe are generally in great physical condition. Sometimes they come in after a run or bike ride along the canal, or for a quick bite at lunch, but the constant is that they are all in fantastic shape.
The mom in the mother/daughter combo that were sitting behind me at lunch today commented on just how good everyone in the place looked, and the daughter, obviously a frequent customer, said “yeah, everyone here is always beautiful - isn’t it great?” Not sure why it’s great, but I imagine it has something to do with the fact that eating around unhealthy-looking people is next to impossible. I guess. If you have .2% body fat.
In stark contrast to the marathoners, kick boxers, and triathletes, I sit. Now, I’m not in horrible shape, but clearly not in the same group as the rest of these people. I’m the one person in the room with the laptop and a (healthier-than-most) hamburger with french fries. My wife and I ran in the Rock & Roll Marathon in Tempe a few years back, so it’s not like I have to roll myself to the counter to order, but when the line is full of tan athletes in Spandex and Lycra, I really stand out.
But that’s okay - I’m in shape. Because, as the joke goes, round is a shape too.
